Each year, the Cornwall & District Labour Council celebrates International Women’s Day with a networking Breakfast. Everyone is welcome. This is the day women worldwide recognize their progress toward full economic, political and social equality and renew their commitment to that goal. The headline speaker for this year is Jill O’Reilly of Ottawa, and she will be speaking of The Living Wage.
The Living Wage is meant to reflect the actual income required for a two-earner, two-child household to live above the poverty line. The campaign was successful in New Westminster in 2010 and is emerging as a force in cities in Eastern Canada. The Cornwall & District Labour Council is pleased to introduce it here.
The presenter, Jill O’Reilly is the head organizer for Acorn, the organization that sponsored the Living Wage campaign in New Westminster. Since its founding in 2004, Acorn, the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now has fought many high profile campaigns against government cuts and clawbacks, unfair payday lending and remittance fees, inadequate wages and austerity measures that penalize working families.
The breakfast is at The Best Western Hotel & Conference Centre on Saturday, March 2, 2013. Coffee and networking at 8:30 and breakfast at 9:00 sharp. The price is $15.00. For tickets to the event, call Elaine MacDonald at 613-938-7763.
