Ontario Power Generation’s St. Lawrence Power Development Visitor Centre has been awarded Gold LEED classification by the Canada Green Building Council.

“St. Lawrence Power Development Visitor Centre is the first project in Cornwall and one of a select few buildings in Canada to achieve a LEED Gold rating,” said Rick Taylor of PBK Architects. “It is quite an achievement that speaks to the vision of Ontario Power Generation.”

The St. Lawrence Power Development Visitor Centre is an outstanding public learning facility on the Cornwall’s waterfront describing the St. Lawrence Seaway and development of the hydroelectric generation at the R.H. Saunders Generation facility. Dynamic exhibits for all ages demonstrate the history of the river, ecology and OPG’s supply of energy to the Province of Ontario.

Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) is a rating system that provides building owners and operators with a concise framework for identifying and implementing practical and measurable green building design, construction, operations and maintenance solutions. With its Gold-level classification, the Visitor Centre stands as testament to a high standard of sustainability, environmental stewardship, excellence in design and healthy city development.

The Visitor Centre is one of a number of Cornwall LEED buildings. The RCMP Detachment in Cornwall was awarded a Silver LEED classification, while the Benson Centre is currently in the process of being classified.

The St. Lawrence Power Development Visitor Centre was designed by Cornwall based architectural firm PBK Architects Inc. and GENIVAR Engineers (formerly the Thompson Rosemount Group).
