For the second straight time this season, the St. Lawrence College (SLC) Cornwall women’s hockey team qualified for the Championship game, this time at the Fleming College Invitational. Their previous championship game took place at the Humber College Invitational, where the Sharks lost 3-0 to Fanshawe College.
Prior to reaching the finals, the Sharks played two round-robin games; the first was a hard fought game against the host Fleming College Knights. The teams were scoreless after regulation and were forced directly into a shootout, where the Sharks lost 2-1.
Needing a win to advance to the semi-finals, the Sharks defeated Georgian College 2-0.Annie Young would score both goals for the Sharks, with Amber Lapierre picking up her third shutout of the season.
In a ‘win and we’re in’ semi-final, the Sharks once again faced the Fleming Knights.Katereena Emmel would score late in the third period for the Sharks, putting SLC up 1-0. But Fleming would respond right away, and sent the game to a shootout. Young would score her third goal of the tournament, in the 16th round of the shootout, sending the Sharks to the Championship game.
The Sharks would once again face a very familiar opponent, the Georgian College Grizzlies, but this time there was an Invitational Championship on the line. The Sharks would get off to a great start with Roberta Mamakwa scoring in the first period. The Knights would tie the game in the second, and with no goals being scored afterwards, the teams entered a sudden death over time.
With the Sharks on the powerplay, they would pepper the Knights with several chances, but a deflected point shot by SLC ended up on the stick of a streaking Knights forward who made no mistake on the breakaway with a perfectly placed shot, handing the Sharks a silver medal in the process.
“Despite not being able to burry on our chances, we still had lot’s of positives that came out of today” said Sharks co-head coach, Sean Boulerice.
“We rebounded well after a tough shootout loss, and our new players adjusted very well to their roles with the team. I have to say that I would be okay with never being part of a 16 round shootout again.” Sean added.
