Cornwall Ontario – In honour of the International Day for Eradication of Poverty the Social Development Council of Cornwal and Area will be hosting a quick coffee house meeting from 8:30am to 9:30am at the Seaway Valley Community Health Centre located at 353 Pitt St. on October 17th 2014 to officially launch the Report entitled “Recommendations for the Poverty Reduction Strategy for the United Counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry and the City of Cornwall”
The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty can be traced back to October 17, 1987. On that date, more than 100,000 people gathered in Paris, France, to honour the victims of extreme poverty, violence and hunger. Since that moment, individuals and organizations worldwide observed October 17 as a day to renew their commitment in collaborating towards eradicating poverty. The Social Development Council of Cornwall and Area in partnership with members of the Poverty Working Group are pleased to host a local event on October 17th to commemorate the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty in Cornwall Ontario.
The Social Development Council of Cornwall and Area will be inviting local candidates to become more aware of poverty in our community and sign page 91 of the (attached) document which states that if elected the candidates will “do everything in ‘their’ power to advocate for poverty reduction in accordance with municipal and provincial guidelines.” Simply because you may not see it every day, does not mean that poverty does not exist in our community. Raising awareness is the first step towards eradication of poverty.
