Trick or Eat: OHA collects 4000 pounds of food for Agape

Cornwall Ontario — Approximately 4000 pounds of food was collected by students from Ontario Hockey Academy on November 3rd for The Agape Food Bank in Cornwall Ontario.

Normally the OHA annual food drive takes place on Halloween night, but due to scheduling issues with hockey, it took place the Monday after Halloween.

“With much appreciation, we are so grateful for the OHA’s support and food. This is wonderful for us as we are entering into the holiday season. I want to thank each and every student for helping us out”, says Agape Executive Director Alyssa Blais.

Agapè’s food bank has been serving area residents since 1971. Open five days a week, the food bank provides free groceries to people in need or in crisis. We hand out between 800 to 900 food items a day. Each individual is assessed and those who qualify are provided with a minimum of 3 days groceries per month. The Agapè Centre serves more than 1000 hungry people each month and 40% are children. It is operated by a staff of 2 and at least 20 volunteers who sort, stock the shelves, bag the food and serve the clients each week.

“The Agape Center plays such an important role in providing support in the Cornwall community. We are truly happy that we can play a role in ensuring the center is able to continue to meet our city’s needs”, says Principal Craig Thanasse.
