As a large portion of our population moves into their retirement years, the idea of senior living becomes very topical. There are several different options depending on the type of care and services that are required.
William and Rejeanne Mesman have recently provided a new option to senior living right here in Cornwall, with the opening of The Dutch House Private Senior Residence.
“Our goal is to offer the seniors of our community, excellent service in a comfortable home-like atmosphere, at an affordable price,” said Mrs. Mesman.
“Aging is a time of adaptation and change” said Mr. Mesman. “Many seniors would like to stay in their own homes, but for many reasons that is not possible, or not the best choice. The Dutch House provides a safe, home like atmosphere but improves quality of life by offering the security of daily contact with others, medication monitoring, home cooked meals and companionship.”
The Dutch House is located on Fifth Street East, close to the Cornwall Community Hospital. The home has been newly renovated, and offers privacy and independence for those who relish having the safety and security of a small family-like home atmosphere.
All 6 bedrooms have television outlets, telephone and a comfortable therapeutic double bed providing a good nights’ sleep. There is a library and sitting room on the upper level for reading, relaxing or kicking back and watching television, playing cards and games. Off the sitting room is an upper balcony which overlooks a beautiful, peaceful garden. A kitchenette, open 24 hours, is also located on the second floor for snacks and beverages. Personal laundry facilities are provided. Laundry will be done by the Dutch House staff, however clients wishing to do their own laundry are free to do so.
The Dutch House features a main floor living room for visiting with family, and will gladly provide meals for visiting family members (additional fee will apply). There is also a large parking lot making it convenient for visitors.
Home cooked meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner are prepared and served in the large kitchen. Bathrooms and sitting areas are cleaned daily, while all rooms are dusted and cleaned weekly.
“The Dutch House provides the opportunity for residents to thrive as they age and maintain their independence for as long as possible,” said Candy Pollard, Business Consultant with the Cornwall Business Enterprise Centre. “For those who need just a little assistance and support on a regular basis, or who are uncomfortable living on their own, this is a perfect option. We commend the Mesman’s for their efforts.”
