Cornwall – Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is advising hunters, anglers and recreational boaters on the St. Lawrence River that ice booms will be installed in narrow stretches of the river, starting on Nov. 23, 2015.
Brent Stajkowski, Manager at OPG’s R.H. Saunders Generating Station, explains, “The booms, which will be placed in the river off Galop Island, in the North Channel, near Johnstown and at Prescott, are chain-and-wood devices used to prevent the build-up of ice during the winter.”
Anyone using the river should take extra care in the narrow reaches where the booms are being installed.
Stajkowski added, “Ice booms are placed in the same narrow reaches of the St. Lawrence River each November and removed in the spring when the ice has melted, before the St. Lawrence Seaway shipping season starts.”
Boaters are also reminded to stay clear, and stay safe near hydro generating stations throughout the year.
OPG is Ontario’s largest clean power generator; its power is 99.7 per cent free of smog and green house gas emissions.
