Dear Editor:

In order to assist in Cornwall City Council’s deliberations regarding the future use of the site of the Bob Turner Centre, I would like to offer some historical background.

The Centre was originally built to honour the 4,000 Cornwallites, out of a population of 16,000, who either served in the Armed Forces or in vital War industries and the 183 servicemen who lost their lives during World War II.

Royal Canadian Legion Chair, A.W. Gammon acknowledged that Cornwall already had a “very fine” Memorial to our fallen Comrades, and as a result “It was felt however, that a more practical manner would be to erect a permanent building to be used as a Community Centre, as an expression of our deep and lasting appreciation of their devotion to the cause of freedom.”
