Cornwall Ontario – 2017 is Canada’s sesquicentennial and we are promised a year of celebrations like never seen before.
Although I am of the opinion that the best way to celebrate the country would be by investing all the funding allocated to the 150th in its infrastructure (did I just say that?), I do understand the need to rejoice.
Canada has come a long way.
From four colonies to what it is today, “The True North Strong and Free”, Canada is one of the most respected country in the world and definitely one of the best place to live. According to MacLeans, (99 reasons why it’s better to be Canadian, 2013) Canadians live longer, have more sex, less suicides, are better educated, more fit, are more tolerant, embrace other cultures and are environmentally conscientious. We’re loved everywhere we go and we’re pretty respectful.
So we should celebrate our origins, our culture and our identity!
All across Canada, initiatives have been taken to make sure the party goes on all year. Free activities taking place nationwide will ensure that every Canadian, in their own communities, can take part in the festivities. One of the perks, you can get is a “discovery pass” which will give you unlimited opportunities to enjoy National Parks, National Marine Conservation Areas and National Historic Sites across the country! For Free! (http://www.commandesparcs-parksorders.ca/)
Locally, plenty will be happening. Already, we kick started the year with an awesome day of wintry fun at Lamoureux park and every night, you can witness the progression of “Light Up Cornwall” , where the Clock Tower, bandshell, Citizen of the Year walkway and other landmarks in the Park have been lit up for all to enjoy! Our own little “Alight at NightS spectacular!
To make sure every Cornwallite can enjoy this festival of lights, the 150 Committee has schedule a Handy Bus for every Friday in February. The vehicle will act as a tour bus taking people through the Park. Saturdays from 3pm to 8pm, take the kids tobogganing. Large bundles of hay have been lined up at the end of the hill located near the splash pad and There is be skating at the pond in the Rotary Eco Garden. The food concession is opened for hot chocolate and MockTail pastries, a true Canadian delicacy.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the 150 Committee who is working relentlessly to bring us all these activities. For more info, visit http://www.cornwall.ca/en/webadmin/canada-150.asp for more info.
