Buying a new car is a very exciting time, even if it is just purchasing a second-hand one from a local dealer rather than a brand new one off the production line. But before you get too carried away with your purchase and the new love of your life, there are a few things that you may need to consider before getting behind the wheel and driving it home.

Purchase your car insurance

It is very important that you have car insurance for your new car before you get behind the wheel and drive it away. It is a good idea to obtain some insurance quotes before you actually purchase your car so that you know that you can afford it and that you will actually be eligible to get it. Obtaining car insurance in Canada can be dependent on your experience of driving as well as having to have a valid driver’s license. If you are eligible, then the quickest way of getting the best insurance quotes is to use an online insurance broker.

In this case, it is best to go for a reputable and established business such as kbd insurance. An insurance broker will obtain quotes on your behalf from reputable insurance companies so that you do not have all the hassle of going to individual sites and entering the same data over and over again, thus saving you a lot of time. They will then forward you the quotes so that you can make a decision on which offer is best for you.

Register your car

When you buy your car, you will need to register ownership of it or transfer the ownership if you are buying a second-hand vehicle. This is a relatively easy thing to do and just requires a bit of paperwork, and a fee which the garage you are buying the car from will helpfully guide you through.

You must register your vehicle in your name. If you do not, you could end up with higher insurance rates or having your car impounded until you pay your registration fees and register your car in the correct fashion.

It is also necessary to keep your insurance, registration, and driving license documents on you when you drive so that if you are stopped by the RCMP, you will have all the documentation that they will require to hand.

Check that your car is roadworthy

Make sure that your new car is totally roadworthy. This should be done not only when you purchase a car but also whenever you are going on a long road trip. By making sure that your car is roadworthy, you are assessing it for possible breakdowns, damage, and that it is legal in regard to breaks, tires, seatbelts, and other safety features. It is also wise to check your fluid levels, that your tires are pumped up to the correct pressure, and that all the hoses on your engine are tight and secure, as well as checking your battery level and fuel gauge.

If in any doubt of what it is that you are looking for, the best option would be to take it to a reputable garage and get a qualified mechanic to have a look for you.
