Cornwall, Ontario – Residents in the Cornwall – Lancaster area are urged to be vigilant as a Special Air Quality Statement has been issued by the Meteorological Service of Canada and Environment and Climate Change Canada on June 5, 2023. High levels of air pollution caused by smoke from forest fires have led to deteriorated air quality in the region. The effects are expected to persist throughout the week.

The smoke plumes, originating from local forest fires as well as fires in Quebec, have significantly impacted air quality in the area. It is important to note that air quality and visibility can vary widely over short distances and change rapidly from hour to hour.

It is crucial for everyone, even at low concentrations, to take precautions and reduce exposure to wildfire smoke. Particularly vulnerable individuals, including those with lung or heart disease, older adults, children, pregnant individuals, and outdoor workers, are at a higher risk of experiencing health effects due to the smoke.

Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada. By staying informed and taking appropriate measures, the community can effectively mitigate the potential health risks posed by the ongoing air pollution.

Please stay safe and prioritize your health during this period of poor air quality. For more detailed information, the public is encouraged to visit the official website of Environment and Climate Change Canada.
