Cornwall has a new place to land on a warm afternoon.
Baskin-Robbins opened its doors at 61 Ninth Street East on April 23rd, and if you’ve driven past the spot at Ninth and Sydney lately you probably noticed the fresh interior and the pink signage going up. The space got a full interior refresh ahead of the grand opening, and it shows.
Manager Jay Patel kept his pitch refreshingly simple: great ice cream, a clean space, and friendly service. No corporate doublespeak, no grand mission statement. Just a place where families can walk in, feel comfortable, and walk out happy. Sometimes that’s exactly what a spot needs to be.
The Baskin-Robbins story itself is kind of old-school in a charming way. Two brothers-in-law, Burt Baskin and Irv Robbins, started the whole thing in 1945 with one idea that sounds almost radical by today’s standards: people should have real choice, and they should be able to try any flavour without paying for it first. That belief turned into 31 flavours, one for every day of the month. The library has since grown to over 1,000 ice cream recipes across nearly 8,000 locations in almost 50 countries.
The Cornwall location will rotate seasonal flavours throughout the year, holiday specials, new cake designs, that sort of thing. So it’s not a static menu. There’s ice cream cakes, sundaes, and specialty beverages on top of the classic scoops. Something for the kids, something for the adults pretending they’re there for the kids.
Ninth and Sydney is a well-trafficked corner, easy to get to, easy to justify stopping at. If the service delivers on what Patel is promising, it has a real shot at becoming one of those places that quietly becomes part of the weekly routine. The kind of spot you don’t plan to go to, you just end up there.
Go try a scoop. You might find your new Saturday afternoon ritual.
And hey, they’ll let you taste before you commit. That’s more than a lot of places in life will offer you.
