AROUND THE COUNTIES WITH SYLVIE. July 25 is a big day for local dragon boat teams. A full day of community team practice, including a brand-new youth team, is taking place on the canal in preparation for the upcoming Cornwall Waterfest Dragon Boat Race. Experienced dragon boat members from the Rideau Canoe Club in Ottawa are on hand to assist with coaching, paddling, and steering. Earlier this morning, I had the opportunity to ride along with the Cornwall Dragon Boat Club – CDBC team during its practice with coach Liz Elton from the Rideau Canoe Club, whose mantra is simple: "Paddle harder." The takeaway is that there is no room for negativity in the boat. If you think someone is paddling too fast, paddle harder. If you think you're too tired, paddle harder. If you think you'll never paddle again, paddle harder! With that kind of encouragement and determination, I think our local teams will be ready to compete when Cornwall Waterfest takes place on August 8 at the Cornwall Canal near Second Street West and Power Dam. Mark your calendars—you won't want to miss it!
