QUEEN’S PARK – In the wake of federal Finance Minister Joe Oliver’s revelation that Ontario is yet to submit its list of priority infrastructure projects to receive federal funding, MPP Jim McDonell insists Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry deserves better.
“Our region’s economic development depends on continuously improving and expanding our existing infrastructure” – MPP McDonell commented. “After hearing the Liberal Government blame their mismanagement and failures on the federal government for months, we now find out that the Province hasn’t even submitted their priority list to the Feds. It’s frustrating to hear them say one thing, do another and then blame someone else. It is a common trait of this government. ”
Other Provinces, including Manitoba, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Alberta have already filed their priority projects list for the Build Canada Plan, which would fund infrastructure development to the tune of $14 billion over 10 years.
“It’s time to quit the whining and just get the job done. Assess the projects, submit our priorities to the Federal government and stop wasting time,” MPP McDonell added. “Municipalities are starting their budget preparation for 2015 and they need to know as soon as possible if any of their funding applications are approved so that they can plan and be shovel-ready in the spring. If we don’t act soon, we will force municipalities to rush projects and tenders, losing part of the prime construction season. This only serves to drive up costs and lessen the economic benefits of this important infrastructure stimulus. The inaction by this Liberal government is inexcusable.”
