Dear Seeker,

Full disclosure: I have not yet spoken to the Vincents or gone to see the rink in person.

The issue was first brought to my attention Monday, while I was out of town. Upon my return, I read up on the issue. I also spoke with Councillor Murphy yesterday, as he had taken a lead in trying to find a solution.

I understand that the boards around the rink are in contravention of a by-law, and I understand the issue about insurance and liability.

That said however, I believe that the rink should stay. I think that its a shame to take it away from the neighbourhood kids who are really enjoying it.

When I lived on Vermont Avenue in Toronto, there was a by-law that prohibited ‘Ball and Hockey Playing’ on the street. Vermont was a sleepy one way street filled with old Victorian homes and very small spaces in the front of homes. Too small to be considered lawns. The backyards were the same. I thought it was a shame that local kids couldn’t play some games.

I feel the same thoughts here. While the by-law is clear, personally, I will be looking to see what, if anything can be done.

Edit: I forgot to mention that I also asked Administration for information on the by-law in question, as well as some other information.

-Justin Towndale

Cornwall Ontario City Councillor
