While owning a car brings convenience and comfort, it also comes with several negative aspects such as damage costs and accident risks. To prevent your car from crashing, familiarize yourself with driving rules and causes of road accidents. It is necessary to exercise caution and pay attention to the road ahead. At the same time, be wary of the cars that are passing in the other lane.

Take a look at some of the most common causes of car crashes to ensure safety when driving.

  1. Fatigue and Sleepiness

Some drivers underestimate the importance of getting proper rest before hitting the road. Experienced drivers know that fatigue, tiredness, or sleepiness can impair their ability to make sound judgments when driving. If you are exhausted, you will not be able to discern the road conditions too. This, in turn, can cause distracted driving and cause your car to crash. Before you embark on your journey, take complete rest and sleep for at least 8 to 9 hours. Furthermore, take enough rest stops to stay awake and fresh. Store some hot coffee in a thermos and sip on it when you are driving. Asking someone to accompany you on your road trip can also help you stay awake. Stay extra careful when driving at night as falling asleep is easier.

  1. Breaking Rules

Around 40% of car crashes are caused due to running a stop sign or a red light and dashing another car at an intersection. At times, you may also unintentionally speed in restricted zones.

If you are traveling to a new city or state, learn everything about the rules that are applicable within the region. Furthermore, be patient when driving. You can spare an extra minute or two to ensure safety. This also applies to aggressive or reckless driving. Be wary of the other cars on the road, do not switch lanes without prior warning, and follow cautionary measures. Texting and driving should be completely avoided too. If you are not fully adept at driving, ask someone to accompany you or let them drive.

  1. Drunk Driving

Around 29 deaths are caused per day due to drunk driving. Even though it is a crime, a few drivers neglect the rules and take the wheel under the influence of alcohol. While you may be careful, the other driver can crash into you due to drunk driving. If you face such a situation, you can file a car accident claim against the guilty. If you live in New Mexico, you can find several competent lawyers who can help you resolve your case. Most Albuquerque Car Accident Lawyers are experienced and offer the best possible outcome for every car crash case. From gathering evidence to filling out the legal documents, your lawyer will walk you through the entire process.

  1. Poor Road Conditions

Another common reason for car crashes is poorly-constructed roads with potholes and cracks. If one of your car’s tires comes in contact with any sharp edges or trenches that are left untreated on the road, it can pop and ultimately lead to a car crash. Poor road conditions can also damage your car, leading to a major financial and health crisis. Try to avoid driving near potholes while being careful with the cars in the other lane.

  1. Bad Weather Conditions

Bad weather conditions like rain, snowfall, or strong wind can disrupt your driving ability. It not only reduces road visibility but also makes the road more slippery and treacherous. In extreme cases, you may not have control over your steering wheel, which can cause your car to skid and crash. If the weather conditions worsen when you are already on the road, pull over or park your car in a safe spot. If possible, try to avoid driving on days with heavy rain or snowfall. Keep a safe distance from the car ahead of you to avoid tailgating and collisions. Most importantly, slow down and let other cars pass by.

  1. Fault in the Vehicle

A car comprises several parts that need to be checked once in a while. From brakes, accelerators, to your car’s engine, a tiny default in any of these parts can lead to a major accident. To avoid accidents, get your vehicle thoroughly checked, especially if you plan to travel longer distances. Learn how to change tires and fix your car in case you get stuck midway.

For most parts of driving, you have to be careful as a tiny error can turn into a life-altering experience. Get enough rest, take your car to a mechanic, and learn the driving rules before you take the wheel. If you do get into an accident due to someone else’s fault, get yourself examined for injuries, talk to your loved ones or a therapist, and hire a car accident lawyer to receive fair compensation.
