Planning a custom build can be fun. In addition to the excitement of owning your own home, a custom build allows you to be completely involved in each project step. You can plan a layout that works for you and your family. You can also choose the best materials when building your custom home. Here are a few of our favorite unique designs to consider in your custom build home design project.

Home Office

More people are working and going to school from home today, making a custom-designed home office an excellent addition. A dedicated workplace can make days at the office or late-night study sessions more enjoyable. A home office can also help you keep your work materials from cluttering the rest of your house. Remote work is here to stay, meaning a built-in home office will also be a selling point if and when you’re ready to move again.

Children’s Playroom

A dedicated children’s playroom can also be a great addition if you have younger children. This gives you a place to store your kid’s toys and games. It also gives them a place to run, jump, and be creative. Let your children be a part of the playroom design. Ensure you incorporate plenty of storage by taking advantage of the walls and ceiling. Corner or drop-down desks can be a great place for learning or studying.

Entertainment Spaces

If you and your family enjoy entertaining or hosting others, a few spacious entertainment spaces may be a nice addition. Plan for ample seating and potentially an outdoor barbeque or oven. You might also incorporate string lights or a built-in bar. You have many great options when planning entertainment spaces, such as the front patio, backyard, basement, or even living room area. Other fun entertainment spaces to consider include a home theater, fitness center, outdoor kitchen, or craft room. Decorate your entertainment spaces with fun prints of your favorite destinations or a sophisticated canvas print.

Heated Floors

Ontario and most of Canada can get pretty cold during the winter months. You’ll love waking up and stepping onto the heated floors in your custom-built Parry Sound home bedroom or bathroom on a chilly morning. Certain amenities, like heated floors, can also give your home a more luxurious appeal, which makes it nicer to live in and helps with your resale value.

Hidden Room

When you choose a custom-built home, you have control over the layout. A hidden room built into the basement or a closet can be a fun addition that also serves as a place to go in an emergency. Your kids will also love the excitement that comes with playing in a hidden room.

Large Mud or Washing Room

The washing room seems to be an afterthought in many of today’s home designs. A large mud or washing room can make washing and drying your clothes easier. A mudroom also gives everyone a place to store their shoes or coats, which can help keep the rest of the house clean. Larger families may enjoy built-in cubbies or lockers in the mud room, which allow kids to store their backpacks or sporting equipment. Ample countertops can give you a place to sort and fold your laundry.

Outdoor Living Space

A backyard patio or deck is a nice way to enjoy the outdoors. An outdoor living space is an even better way to enjoy meals or entertaining outdoors. You can make an outdoor living space a part of your permanent home structure with a concrete or brick ceiling. Use sliding doors to let the natural light in. Hang a few breezy curtains, and your outdoor living space may become a favorite part of your home.

Natural Lighting

Windows let natural light in, which can make your home feel larger and brighter. Try creating a path of sun windows along the walls or ceilings to let in as much sunlight as possible. Sunlights with retractable shades also allow you to close them during storms or at night if you prefer. You can never have too many windows in the living room, kitchen, dining room, or entertainment spaces.

Built-In Storage

Similar to lighting, you can never have too much storage. Built-in shelves are a great way to increase your home’s storage. Don’t forget about unique storage solutions, like a wine cabinet or storage room for your valuables. The great thing about storage solutions is that you can install them in unused areas without taking up additional space, like under the stairs or on an unused wall.

Custom-built homes allow you to get creative. Consider what features are most important to you when building your dream home. Work with a custom designer to plan a home that you and your family will love.
