This year, Diversity Cornwall will be hosting its annual Pride celebration from August 4th to August 13th. This will be their biggest Pride celebration yet, with a week full of activities for the community. The annual Pride festival seeks to increase visibility, wellness, acceptance and awareness of the 2SLGBTQ+ community, and also serves as a fundraiser for Diversity Cornwall’s year round programs and services.
Diversity Cornwall shared the following about why the Pride festival is important. “Pride week is an opportunity for residents of Cornwall, Akwesasne and SD&G to celebrate diversity, love, inclusion and acceptance of 2SLGBTQ+ community members. While we have come a very long way in the fight for equal rights for 2SLGBTQ+ community members, there is still a very long way to go. We have seen a dramatic increase in homophobia and transphobia in our community over the past year, and this has highlighted the importance of creating spaces, events and services that welcome the 2SLGBTQ+ community and lets them know that they are not alone, and that they can feel safe to be themselves in our community. The Pride festival is an opportunity for all of those who support the right to be yourself, and love who you love, to demonstrate their support for our community, and to show that the negative attitudes towards marginalized community members are not representative of the majority of our community.
Pride week will kick off with a drag show fundraiser at La Maison on August 4th, followed by a watercolor painting workshop, drag story time, a virtual drag 101 workshop, Big Gay Comedy Show 3 by Off Your Rocker, the Pride Parade and Festival on August 12th, and ending with a Pride Brunch and Pride service on August 13th.
