DUNVEGAN, ON — July 12, 2025 – If you love textiles, history, or simply enjoy discovering traditional skills in a hands-on way, mark your calendar for A Stitch In Time, a full-day celebration happening Saturday, July 12, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Glengarry Pioneer Museum.

This unique event invites visitors of all ages to explore the fascinating world of fibres, fabrics, and functional art through a combination of exhibits, live demonstrations, and engaging talks.

Where Past Meets Present

The museum’s historic setting, nestled in the heart of Glengarry County, provides the perfect backdrop for this celebration. Guests can wander through displays of antique textiles from the museum’s own collection, paired with vibrant contemporary creations by local quilt guilds, spinners, weavers, and fibre artists working in a range of media.

Hands-On Fun and Fibre Talks

Visitors will be able to get up close and personal with textile arts through demonstrations of spinning, needle felting, rug hooking, and more. You can even try your hand at a few of the skills to see if one might become your next favourite hobby!

Three special presentations will take place during the day:

  • The Art of Kilt Making – A deep dive into the cultural significance and craftsmanship behind this Scottish tradition.
  • The Importance of Choosing the Right Thread – Learn how the smallest details can make the biggest difference in textile work.
  • Sewing Hacks – Handy tips and tricks every home sewist should know.

Don’t Miss “Waulking the Cloth”

A standout feature of the day is sure to be the Waulking the Cloth demonstration led by members of the Glengarry Twistle Guild. In this interactive experience, visitors can join in an old Scottish work bee to help felt wool while keeping rhythm to traditional Gaelic work songs. It’s as fun as it is educational—and something you won’t find just anywhere.

Shopping, Kids’ Crafts, and Local Food

Textile lovers can also browse a curated selection of vendors offering fabrics, wool, thread, and other fibre-related goods. Meanwhile, younger visitors can wet felt wool, play, and learn with hands-on crafts designed just for them.

And don’t worry—there’ll be delicious local food and refreshments available on-site to keep you fuelled for a full day of learning and exploring.

Plan Your Visit

Whether you’re a seasoned maker, a curious beginner, or just looking for a great family outing, A Stitch In Time offers a welcoming and immersive way to connect with the timeless art of textiles.
