Two individuals, including a 15-year-old, are facing charges following a hate crime incident in Cornwall, Ontario. The Cornwall Police Service (CPS) has reported that the crime involved a Nazi flag spray-painted onto a business, alongside a hateful slur targeting the Jewish community.
The CPS launched an investigation after receiving a mischief complaint on September 22. Officers responded to the scene at a business on Adolphus Street, where they discovered the disturbing graffiti.
“Members of the CPS observed graffiti, which was spray-painted onto an Adolphus Street business,” police stated. “The graffiti featured a Nazi flag and a hateful phrase directed toward Jewish people.”
The CPS Hate Crime Unit continued its investigation and, with the help of the public, identified two suspects. Images of the suspects had been released to the public in a bid for information.
A 15-year-old from Cornwall has been charged with failing to comply with a probation order and mischief under $5,000. A 19-year-old, also from Cornwall, faces charges of mischief under $5,000 and counselling to commit an indictable offence.
“This type of behaviour has no place in our society, and we are hopeful that more members of our community will continue to feel comfortable reporting such incidents,” Staff Sgt. Tracey Pilon said in a statement.
“We would also like to extend our sincere thanks to the members of the public who came forward with information that helped us identify those responsible.”
Cornwall Police encourage the public to remain vigilant and continue reporting incidents of hate-related crimes in the community.
