Most of you may have been awaiting this topic while the rest of you guys may not care for it. Before I even start, I just want to give you a disclaimer that I have never dated in my life so I won’t have a lot of personal stories. The majority of this article will be mainly told from an outsider’s point of view.
Most teens like to feel older and mature, but not with actions. To be mature in the eyes of teens means to wear makeup, wear revealing clothes, and have romances. This doesn’t just apply to teens though. Kids as young as 5 do it too. However at that age they haven’t learned any other love that isn’t parental or between friends. So it’s more like asking a girl out because you liked her pigtails and then proceed to never talk to her again.
Middle school relationships are where they start looking for “serious relationships” that only last for a month on average. Usually its just hugging and maybe kissing if they want to be considered cute or in love. It also has a lot of creating drama out of nothing. Like when two girls have a crush on the same guy. But other than that, middle school romances are for the most part innocent, right….?
What really made me write this was from a few text messages my friend had shown me. A girl in our class wanted my friend to find her a boyfriend so my friend texted this guy, asking him a few questions in order to match them up. The guy had said he wanted a girl that could send pics (nudes) along with dating him. My friend had asked more questions before the guy mentioned his interest in having sx with someone. “Aren’t you a little too young?” my friend asked. “No” was his only response before their conversation eventually ended. Which brings me to my first point – when I mentioned teens like to feel mature and older, s*x is not out of the question. If doing means you feel cool and mature, why wouldn’t you?
I think its also an overwhelming want to do what your peers want you to do. An example would be during first grade, when crushes first started becoming known in my class. All the girls were so excited to have one and began sharing who they liked. It came down to my turn and I was nervous. I mean, what could I say? Up until that point I thought it was a universal concept that all boys had cooties. So why did every girl all of a sudden like them? What if they caught a disease or something??
“Ummm that guy over there in grade 2” I said quickly pointing at a boy.
“Ooooo an older guy, how romantic” the other girls giggled.
To this day I still don’t know his name…
But the point of the story is that we always want to do what others are doing and this want only gets stronger as time goes on.
A girl in my class had actually sent nudes to a boy which eventually got leaked. Now, I don’t know what may have prompted her to do so and I’m not gonna sit here and pretend that I do, so take what I say with a grain of salt, but I do have a feeling it may have been that she wanted to please others in exchange for love. I can’t imagine giving your body to someone just for them to betray you. I am aware she deals with bodily issues which may have been a factor, because oftentimes we look around and around for the person who can love our bodies in ways we can’t. So when you finally find someone who will say things like, “you look beautiful” we want to throw our lives and bodies away for this person, which can backfire.
That’s why I think middle school and early high school relationships can be pointless or even toxic because most of us are learning to love ourselves and who we are. So sometimes trying to love someone else too soon may not be in your best interest especially when you choose to love the wrong person.
I know a lot of people may come at me for this but I advise you to avoid romances at this early age and instead try to spread some of that love to your family and friends
Thank you for reading and I hope you had a good Valentines day with your loved ones, bye! :)
