AROUND THE COUNTIES WITH SYLVIE. On August 8th, the Cornwall Waterfest Dragon Boat Race took place on the canal with a record 27 teams from Cornwall, Ottawa, Montreal and Kingston, bringing a total of 540 paddlers to the water. Spirits and energy ran high throughout the day as the competition heated up. Spectators lined the canal, cheering on their favourite teams, while on shore, teams warmed up with stretches and a little dancing to the rhythmic tunes of Sheldon Grant Professional Sound and Lighting. A hydration station with water from Cristill Rock made sure everyone had enough water, while Weenie's on wheels fed hundreds of hungry people. Eighteen vendors also offered a variety of handmade and commercial items throughout the day. Miraculously, the rain held off until the end of the final race. The award ceremony was likely the quickest one ever held, with medals being handed out through the deluge. Despite the rain and the waterlogged grounds, it was a great day. A big thank you goes out to all the dedicated volunteers who stayed behind in the rain to help with the cleanup. The race results are as follows: Ladies Grand Final First Place – Psirens (Ottawa) – Finishing Time: 00:53:64 Second Place – Blades of Glory (Ottawa) – Finishing Time: 00:55:36 Third Place – Bytown Wyverns (Ottawa) – Finishing Time: 00:55:70 Club Grand Final First Place – Paddlin’ Hellfish (Ottawa) – Finishing Time: 00:51:03 Second Place – Bytown Dragons (Ottawa) – Finishing Time: 00:52:05 Third Place – Lunasea (Ottawa) – Finishing Time: 00:53:06 Community Grand Final First Place – Pinoy Floaters – Finishing Time: 00:54:32 Second Place – Cornwall Rock the Boat Brigade – Finishing Time: 00:57:17 Third Place – Desjardins Dragons – Finishing Time: 00:57:70 Congratulations to all the participants, and to everyone who helped make the Cornwall Waterfest Dragon Boat Races such a great community event!
