Shaving your face isn’t rocket science, but there is a certain learning curve regarding tools and techniques.  Your teenage boy is likely super excited about taking his next step towards manhood. Teaching him to shave is a great way to create new bonding memories.

If you’re having trouble finding a good place to start in your educational endeavour, take a moment to organize your thoughts.  Read through this brief look at some helpful tips for teaching your teenage boy to shave.

Start by teaching him about razor variations

Shaving is about more than just a traditional razor.  You’ll need an edger to get the sensitive spots like underneath your nose and around your sideburns.

Teach your son that he can choose an electric razor for a simple maintenance shave.  A quality straight razor shave will give him the closest shave possible, but technique is important to avoid cuts and knicks.

Move on to pre-shaving prep

You can’t just jump right into a shave.  You have to prepare your face for what’s to come.  Teach your teenager to soak his face with warm water to soften the hairs if he’s using a traditional razor to shave.

If he uses an electric razor, he needs a quality pre-shave lotion to prep his facial hair for trimming.  Prep is important for a comfortable end result.

Talk about various shaving methods

You need to equip your teen with the knowledge of various shaving techniques.  Razor burn is always to be avoided, and technique can help.  Make sure your teenager knows that you don’t have to press down super hard to get a close shave.

Teach your boy to shave with the grain.  It’s not entirely out of the question to shave against the grain, he will just need to properly care for his skin afterwards.

When he’s done shaving

A man’s face needs a moisturizing lotion or aftershave after he is done shaving to close up pores and renew the skin.  You’ll keep your face clear of pimples with proper aftercare as well. Avoid using aftershaves that are heavy with alcohol, as alcohol will dry out your skin.

Teach him how to properly clean up afterward

There’s nothing worse than a bunch of stray facial hair littering your bathroom sink/counter.  No one wants to contend with a pile of beard in the bathroom, so teach your boy to be meticulous when cleaning up after shaving.

Sweep the floor as well.  You can’t be sure all of the hair made it into the sink, so you have to be thorough.  Stray facial hairs can implant themselves in your feet and lead to some pretty uncomfortable consequences.
