Luc and Sue are well known locally for their involvement in a number of community causes and events, and last year, embarked on a new venture with the purchase of the Finch Market.
Luc McCabe is an experienced chef with a passion for open fire cooking. He is known to many for lending his culinary expertise to local events such as the Wonderful World of Whisky and the Iron Skillet competition at Upper Canada Village. He has also worked with leading chefs around the world, and is now associated with the True Cooks and Spiceology brands. He’s one of only a handful of Canadian chefs to be certified in A 5 Japanese Wagyu Beef.
Sue Stewart (Susie to the locals) grew up in Finch, spent 20 years in radio broadcasting and now the last 6 years as a realtor with RE/MAX Marquis. When she was approached to sell what was then known as the D&D Market, Sue saw an opportunity to transform the business into a modern market that would provide a platform for Luc to explore his love of rustic cooking and BBQ. In a few short months the Finch Market has earned a reputation as the place to go for amazing meat, exotic spices and and more.
“Our goal is to build on that success by delivering what customers are asking for – good food that offers unique flavour profiles and is made with quality ingredients and seasonal local offerings.” says Luc.
The Finch Market is a typical small town grocery store – with a unique twist. It has a butcher counter, with a butcher that has over 40 years experience, that offers the very finest in Canadian beef along with an exclusive offering of Japanese A5 Wagyu beef. Chef Luc McCabe is on hand to provide tips on how to get the most of your cooking experience, and make your dinner guests stand up and applaud. You will also find a great collection of Dutch products along with a growing line of spices, rubs, hot sauces and more.
“We take our role as an essential service very seriously. We are constantly tweaking our product lines to meet our customers’ needs, and if a customer would like us to bring in a particular product we can pivot quickly and meet their needs. This includes our LCBO offerings. At the same time, we are helping introduce people to new tastes and food experiences, and we will be expanding our catering services over the coming months.”
When asked to define success, Sue tells us: “Success for us is a satisfied customer. We are very fortunate to have a wonderful team of people that love coming to work. We see our customers as family, and we want to be there for them when they need us – whether its for a couple of steaks, some cinnamon buns or tips on cooking that Thanksgiving turkey.”
Like many other businesses, The Finch Market had to adapt to the Covid-19 pandemic. “We have worked hard to create a safe environment for our customers and staff by following the public safety guidelines from the Eastern Ontario Health Unit very closely. It sometimes has meant a few less people in the store, but we are all in this together and we are very pleased in how the entire community has worked together to address this issue.” ended Sue.
