Every hair-dying journey starts with the right kind of products, and a good developer is a crucial part! If you want to do the job right and get the best results, you must be careful when choosing what products to use, and more importantly what are the best picks for your hair! So here are some tips for choosing the right developer!

Different Types of Developer

It’s safe to say that developer is one of the main ingredients used when dying your hair. Furthermore, as Allaboutthegloss.com explains, the developer acts as a peroxide, and it’s mixed with either bleach or a hair dye in order to activate it. There are multiple levels of developers and their strengths are drastically different!

40 vol developer

The highest volume of developers you can find is volume 40! This is a force not to be reckoned with, and it should be used with caution! Definitely to be avoided if you are not a professional!

30 vol developer

This is a little lighter volume, but it’s still on the higher side and should be used carefully. Usually, salons use a product called Olaplex, as it softens the initial hashes of the developer and protects the hair shafts from breaking.

20 vol developer and lower

When dying your hair at home, usually you should use the standard 20 volume or below, as it’s not as harsh but still does the job. It’s better to do two rounds of hair dye or bleach with a 10 volume and gradually get to the desired tone, rather than frying your hair with a 30 or up volume!

Developer in a Box

There are two ways you can dye your hair, by getting a box dye, a bleach kit, or by picking and gathering the products separately! Thankfully, salons are open again, so you don’t have to risk ruining your hair, But if you want to experiment, it’s best to stick with kits and box dyes, or ask a professional to pick out the products to combine for you!

Depending on the Hair Dye

There are different developers for different purposes! New hair trends are going in and out of style, so if you want a quick slight change, a 10 volume developer mixed with a funky hair dye will do! But if you want to lift your hair color and lighten it, you’ll need something way stronger – or do it in multiple sessions with less of a drastic result!

Depending on the Hair Type

Every hair is different, and it should be dyed according to its needs! Since there are specific hair types, every one of these types has its own pros and cons when it comes to bleaching and dying. Some are more durable but need multiple rounds of dye, whilst others are fragile and can’t take high levels of bleach. Since the developer gives the dye and the bleach their strengths, they should be chosen wisely!

Everyone wants to experiment with hair at least once in their lives and that’s totally fine. It’s all about being educated on the matter and knowing what products go best with your hair! As long as you are careful and get the right kind of products, there is nothing to wo
