Living a sustainable and eco-friendly lifestyle is better for the planet, your health, and your finances. A recent survey in the area found that the majority of Cornwall residents want to take action against climate change. This is unsurprising considering the extreme weather issues the city has had to deal with in recent years. So, just what are Cornwall and its residents doing to tackle this ongoing problem?
Staying educated
Cornwall is very good at raising awareness of the importance of being eco-friendly and sustainable. Every year, the city holds an Eco Day, which will take place on August 7 this year. The event gives locals the chance to explore Cornwall’s natural world. But when questioned about the annual event, 290 people weren’t aware of it, compared to 113 who were. Cornwall will also implement a Food Waste Plan by 2025. The plan involves food waste being collected at the curb, treated, and turned into fertilizer. The team behind the Let’s Talk about Climate Change survey says that this is another eco-friendly measure that the majority of people living in Cornwall aren’t aware of. By keeping yourself educated on local sustainability events, you’ll be better educated on these topics and able to put measures into place to improve the way you live.
Living a sustainable life
While Cornwall’s impending food waste scheme is great for the city, it’s more beneficial to reduce food waste. You can do this by meal planning and only buying the food that you need. Measure out portions rather than guessing them to avoid wasting food such as rice and pasta. Freezing leftovers is a good idea, too. When shopping for clothing, choose sustainable items that have been made in an ethical and environmentally-friendly way. The shoes you buy should be made from sustainable materials, such as recycled plastic or organic cotton, rather than leather. You can clean pieces of footwear made from these materials in the washing machine. This will get rid of bad smells, dirt, and bacteria. A regular cold wash will ensure your shoes last longer, which makes them better for the environment than non-sustainable alternatives.
Increasing tree coverage
The majority of residents in Cornwall are unaware of the tree canopy bylaw in the area, according to the Let’s Talk about Climate Change survey. In 2019, the city asked the government to increase local tree coverage to 30%. Increasing tree coverage plays a big role in climate change as trees provide shade and reduce temperature. They also help to make the air cleaner. Canada has pledged to plant 2 billion trees by 2030 and says that by 2050 these trees will have reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 12 Mt1. You can even help with this goal, by planting your own trees in your front and back garden.
Cornwall is a great supporter of the environment. The city encourages residents to live a sustainable and eco-friendly lifestyle wherever possible and does whatever it can to provide resources for them to do this.
