Man’s (and woman’s) best friend got top billing at Cornwall Public Library Thursday afternoon as a special March break Agility and Obedience Dog Demonstration was offered to a standing room only crowd.
Dog Agility is a fun, competitive dog sport in which dogs run through an obstacle course in a race for time and accuracy. Working as a team, the dog and handler navigate the course which can consist of a number of jumps, tunnels, teeter totters and weave poles.
Several dog owners were on hand to present their beloved pets to an excited group of children and parents cheering on the dogs as they performed. It was a “pawsitive” experience that left everyone with a smile on their face.
But the canine experience doesn’t end there. Weekly on Saturday mornings, the library offers a special program named Paws and Books where young children read a passage from a book directly to a dog in the library. Reading to dogs can boost reading skills in children as well as help with emotional and social skills. This popular program has been offered for several years at the library and has been highly successful.
