BONVILLE, ON January 26, 2019- Local Member of Parliament and Conservative candidate Guy Lauzon announced that he will not seek re-election in the upcoming federal election in Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry. The announcement was made at the local Conservative Association’s Annual General Meeting on Saturday morning in front of many long-time friends and supporters.

“It has been an honour and privilege to have served as your Member of Parliament for the past 15 years. I have loved each and every day, but it is time to let the next generation of leaders step forward in our community,” said Guy Lauzon. “Frances and my family have been beside me every step of the way, and I have been blessed with wonderful staff and great, passionate volunteers. Rest assured though, I will still be very active to ensure this riding elects a Conservative Member of Parliament and makes Andrew Scheer the next Prime Minister of Canada.”

Lauzon has served as the Member of Parliament for Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry since 2004 and has been elected by his constituents in five consecutive federal elections (2004, 2006, 2008, 2011, and 2015). Lauzon received a majority of votes in each of his four re-election bids (2006, 2008, 2011, and 2015). He served in a variety of capacities including National Conservative Caucus Chair for 8 years and Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Agriculture & Agri-Food.

“I am grateful to the constituents of Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry who have shown their confidence in me for the past 15 years. This has been the greatest and most rewarding job I have ever had,” said Lauzon. “Whether it has been at church suppers, business openings, community events and meetings, or at their doorsteps, Frances and I have met and become friends with thousands of people. We are blessed to have shared such a wonderful opportunity together.”

With Mr. Lauzon’s announcement, the Conservative Party of Canada will conduct a nomination process in the coming months to select a new Conservative candidate in the upcoming federal election.

A STATEMENT FROM THE RIGHT HONOURABLE STEPHEN HARPER

As Guy Lauzon announces his plan to retire from politics, let me use this opportunity to acknowledge and thank him for his tremendous service to our country, our party, and his constituents.

Guy came to politics after a long career in the federal public service, many years in business, and a distinguished record of charitable activity. In other words, he had already done it all even before his first electoral victory in 2004.
Guy served in many roles in Opposition and Government, but his most notable time came as our National Caucus Chair from 2008 to 2015. In that position, he was much admired by all his Conservative colleagues and was a tower of strength for our Government.

Yet Guy’s attention never wandered far from Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry. He worked tirelessly to defend and advance the interests of his constituents. This accounts for his four subsequent re-elections, in which he always exceeded 50% of the vote.

To say Guy’s retirement is well earned is truly an understatement. Laureen and I wish Frances and Guy all the best in the next stage of their lives.

Stephen Harper
22nd Prime Minister of Canada
