How to Make a Design Statement with Wall Decor

A wall left blank is a missed opportunity to install some great decor. So if you’ve got some empty wall space, it’s time to think about how you can turn it into a proper design statement. Don’t know where to start? Then we hope you’ll be inspired by our short guide to wall decor!

The truth is, decorating in style isn’t as simple as it used to be – sticking up some mass-produced posters from the high street just won’t cut it anymore. Contemporary wall decor should be meaningful and reflect the homeowner’s tastes, attitudes, and interests. Your walls say something about who you are, just like your outfit or your music playlist – so these days, custom interior decor is the name of the game.

We’ve selected four lively wall art options that will get any wall in your home bursting with character. Let’s explore them one by one!

#1. Photo Walls

When you hear the phrase “photo wall”, your first association might be a gallery wall – a large wall art display featuring not just photos but also all kinds of prints, maps, postcards, and other evocative knickknacks. A gallery wall is one of the most popular choices for modern wall decoration, but getting it right demands a bit of careful judgment.

The more items you want to display on your wall, the more thought needs to go into it. So if you’re pressed for time, or you’re not a confident designer, why not go the minimalist route and create your photo wall with just a couple of prints? According to custom printing specialists BestCanvas.ca, the less well-known printing mediums – think canvas, acrylic glass, or composite metal panels – will work best here.

These contemporary print formats look effortlessly sophisticated. Acrylic, metal and canvas prints boast clean lines and a frameless aesthetic that means they can seamlessly blend in almost any room. These are premium decor elements that bring custom interior design to a whole new level – and if you choose a reliable discount company, you’ll get professional-quality prints at bargain-basement prices too!

#2. Typographic Posters

Posters with witty quotes and typographic art never went out of fashion – but in the past the print quality was often underwhelming. Mass-produced, thin, and prone to tears and creases, posters used to have a short lifespan and were suited more to a student dorm than a fully realized modern living space. But that’s changed now, thanks to new advances in custom printing. Today’s high-quality, long-lasting posters are getting new respect in the interior design world.

You can’t go wrong with typographic posters that feature a quote from your favorite song, an inspirational saying, or simply a heart-warming slogan. And another advantage of posters is that they’re conveniently lightweight, so you can attach them to the wall with double-sided tape or putty – and you won’t have to worry about wall damage if you fancy a change in the future.

#3. Wall Panels

Wall paneling brings a touch of class and elegance to any interior. Traditionally, wall panels have been made from wood, cork, stone, or brick, but these days you can find wallet-friendly alternatives from man-made materials too. These more affordable wall panels often feature natural patterns such as wood or marble texture – so creating a sophisticated look should be easy even if you’re sticking to a tight budget.

If you want to install panels right around the perimeter of the room, we recommend covering no more than the lower one-third to one-half of the wall, to avoid a crowded feel. But if you’re creating a single statement wall, feel free to cover it with panels from floor to ceiling!

#4. Mirrors

Mirrors create the illusion of extra space and give a big lift to smaller rooms (though there’s no reason not to display them in spacious interiors too). Hang a mirror and your room should instantly feel brighter and larger. Many interior designers believe that clusters of small and medium-sized mirrors work best, so consider displaying several mirrors together – in neat grids or fancy freestyle patterns.

Last Word on Statement Walls

If you want to add character to your bare walls, there’s no shortage of ways to do it. And the best thing is, that you don’t have to stick rigidly to a single design scheme – there’s always room for a bit of creative freedom and self-expression.

Want to hang just a couple of canvas prints? Great! Want to combine posters with mirrors? That works too! Just make sure that your wall decor matches the general atmosphere of the room, and experiment with different combinations until you find the perfect mix!
