It is quite obvious that focus is tied to desire. To showcase this, just look at how easy it is to think about numerous ways and ideas to achieve something when you really want it. On the other hand, if you don’t want to achieve a goal, you tend to gravitate towards all the reasons it’s not a good idea. In order to achieve the ultimate focus, you need to be honest about your desires to meet a certain goal. Do you really want it? This will save you a lot of time at the start of your venture. 

Control Your Emotions Using Your Passion

It’s clear why you should do this. As you aim for meeting your goals, your passion overcomes problems as you gravitate towards achieving those goals. However, your emotions can be overwhelming when you face problems and even encourage you to let go. In order to maintain your focus, you need to harness your passion to control emotions, helping you clearly look ahead at what you wish to achieve. 

Have a Clear Purpose

In order to meet your goals, you need to be specific. That’s because it’s virtually impossible to think towards a moving target. If you keep shifting your goals, you’re also demanding your brain to constantly shift its focus, making you lose direction. So, to maintain your focus, take a few minutes to write down what you’re looking to achieve in the clearest manner possible. 

Turn Negative Thinking into Positive Action

Most people do not know this, but negative thinking is one of the most valuable assets. Rather than leading to negativity, you can harness negative thinking to free your imagination and achieve exactly what you want. 

Utilizing the term ‘Why not = How to’ can stimulate the imagination to focus and turn negative thinking into positive action. This is a technique that has been used by many when it comes to both personal and professional life progress. An example is Anna, a member of a huge corporation in the United Kingdom. She looked at the ‘why nots’ or rather reasons she couldn’t progress in her career. Some of them included:

-Too lonely to leave her friends and family

-She lacked contacts and experience for her career path. 

-She didn’t have a visa to work in the United States, which was vital in progressing her career. 

Ann used these downsides as a signpost, rather than a career progression blocker. With this mentality, she was able to transform the ‘why nots’ into a ‘how to plan’ to meet her goals. To achieve this, she: 

-Sought out mentors and colleagues who could help her get the knowledge and experience that helped her progress. Among these contacts, she came across a sponsor who helped her gain a temporary contract in a corporation based in New York. This contract acted as a springboard that helped her secure a permanent position. 

As for keeping up with friends and family back in the UK, Anna used social media and other electronic solutions. Not to mention that she was able to make new friends in the US.

Simply put, negative thinking can be used to help you focus on meeting your goals, as long as you use it in a positive manner.

Utilize Cool Logic in Problematic Situations

This is perhaps the most important skill when it comes to maintaining your focus. Most people start with clear goals in their minds, but then become diverted for one reason or another and lose direction. 

Focusing on the issue and not your ego is one of the best ways to keep clear direction on what you want to achieve and also learn to notice the difference in all conversations that you hold. This means that in every conversation, be it with others or yourself, ensure you focus on the issue that you want to achieve. Do not allow the conversation to focus on your egos to be involved. For instance, if you notice your focus is more on your ability or that of others to meet your goal or project, it is easy to find yourselves being defensive and allowing the egos to take center stage rather than the issue at hand. 

With these tips, you should be in a position to achieve clarity of thought and focus.
