Akwesasne – Celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day at the Native North American Travelling College this Wednesday, June 21, with various engaging activities that showcase the rich cultural heritage of Native North American communities. The event promises to be a memorable and educational experience for all attendees.
The festivities will kick off at 11 a.m. with Turtle Revitalization rock painting. Participants can engage in this traditional art form, creating unique rock paintings while learning about the significance of turtles in Indigenous cultures.
At noon, attendees will gather for lunch and a Welcoming Address, followed by an enlightening session on the history of the Native North American Travelling College. Mike Kanentakeron Mitchel and the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne representatives will provide insights into the college’s rich legacy and commitment to promoting Indigenous knowledge and traditions.
From 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., visitors can enjoy free museum tours, delving into the diverse and vibrant history of Native North American communities. This opportunity offers a chance to deepen one’s understanding of the contributions and resilience of Indigenous peoples throughout history.
Simultaneously, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., attendees can immerse themselves in various engaging activities. The Crosswinds Band will fill the air with music. Traditional activities will also be available, allowing participants to try their hand at social dance demonstrations. Additionally, Sweetgrass Bookmark Demonstrations will showcase the artistry and craftsmanship of creating beautiful bookmarks using Sweetgrass. To bring the day to a memorable close, Bear Fox will grace the stage for an inspiring finale.
In addition, the Akwesasne Skatepark and the Akwesasne Family Wellness Program have joined forces to create an exciting community celebration for Indigenous Peoples Day. This collaborative event offers a wide range of family-oriented activities at the A’nowara’ko:wa Arena from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Attendees can look forward to bounce houses, crafts, dancing, skateboarding, food, and more. The fusion of these two events aims to create a vibrant and inclusive celebration that fosters community engagement and appreciation for Indigenous cultures.
