Unionville, Ontario, January 16, 2024 – The Canadian Government is bolstering the economic vitality of southern Ontario’s main streets with a $15 million investment. This initiative aims to support local businesses and organizations, potentially creating up to 5,750 jobs and promoting community growth.

Southern Ontario’s main streets are cultural hubs, attracting tourists and locals alike. The government recognizes the importance of small businesses and their role in the nation’s economy.

“My Main Street will help revive local businesses, create job opportunities, and foster community growth,” said the Honourable Filomena Tassi, Minister responsible for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario.

Investment in My Main Street (MMS)

Today, Minister Tassi, along with MPs Majid Jowhari and Paul Chiang, announced a $15 million investment in the Canadian Urban Institute (CUI) for the My Main Street (MMS) program. This funding will launch two new programs supporting up to 325 businesses in 100 communities and 75 community projects, drawing more people to main streets.

Job Creation and Inclusivity

The investment is expected to create 5,750 jobs, with a commitment to allocate 25 percent of funding to rural communities and 50 percent to underrepresented groups, promoting inclusivity.

“Supporting main street businesses is crucial for vibrant local economies and strong communities,” emphasized Majid Jowhari, MP for Richmond Hill.

Building on Past Success

This builds on a 2021 investment of $23.25 million in the My Main Street initiative, supporting nearly 4,000 businesses, creating 6,000 jobs, and leveraging an additional $16 million in investment.

Role of the Canadian Urban Institute

The Canadian Urban Institute (CUI) has been promoting urban development since 1990, working to make communities more resilient and inclusive. Through MMS, CUI will provide Main Street Community Profiles, helping local businesses tailor their plans to their communities.

FedDev Ontario’s Commitment

FedDev Ontario has invested over $2.5 billion in more than 3,000 projects across southern Ontario since 2015, generating an estimated 190,000 jobs.

The Government of Canada is dedicated to supporting small businesses and fostering prosperous communities on main streets across southern Ontario.
