Hi there! Welcome to another edition of local spins from Bud’s records and Kool things.

On this edition I’ll be talking about our current rent situation and what we’re experiencing with our landlord.

Experts Warn Cornwall Crowd: Ontario’s Health System Is Quietly Being Hollowed Out

First, I wanted to thank everybody for coming out for record store day April 20th. What a turnout this year, lots of happy customers. What a lineup we had! Shoutout to our friends at Cogeco cable and Seaway News for covering the event.

I also wanted to give a tremendous thank you to everyone who came out for our Agape food drive that happened here atBud’s Records April 27th and 28th. We had our traditional $20 brand new sealed records bin but this time the price was $25 a record so the extra $5 was donated to the Agape Centre for the soup kitchen and other things needed. If you’re interested in seeing how much money we raised check out ourBud’s Records & Kool Things Facebook page.

I wanted to shed some light on the matter of our current rent situation and what’s happening to our store and storage unit.

We have been at this location for 5 years on a month-to-month basis. When we took over in 2020 we were not made aware that we should be concerned that in Ontario, on a commercial unit there is no limit of increases. Meaning your landlord could more than double your rent with 30 days’ notice to accept and sign the lease or get out. This is where we are now and had no choice but to accept the new terms. We are fully aware that the landlord is within his rights to do this, but that doesn’t mean it’s the “right” thing to do. Small businesses in Ontario have had it rough through the pandemic plus rising costs of everything.

We are opening the conversation to our fellow small business owners who may have had similar experiences or have an opinion on this, let’s talk about it. This should not be a learning experience for any small business owners.

Reach out to us. Or your MPP. We deserve the same protection that residential renters have .
