Dozens of local dogs are now better protected against a potentially fatal disease, thanks to a special vaccination clinic hosted by the Ontario SPCA and Humane Society in Cornwall over the weekend.
On July 13, the Agora Catholic Centre/Nativity Bowling Alley transformed into a bustling hub of wagging tails and grateful pet owners as the Ontario SPCA’s team delivered free vaccinations and wellness resources to families facing barriers to veterinary care. In total, 62 dogs received essential shots, including the critical vaccine against parvovirus — a highly contagious illness that can quickly turn deadly.
“Parvovirus is highly contagious and can be deadly, but it’s preventable with vaccination,” said Bonnie Bishop, Eastern Regional Manager of Community Outreach Services for the Ontario SPCA and Humane Society. “This clinic helped remove barriers to care, while also connecting families with the resources they need to keep their animals safe and cared for.”

The event was open to people referred by local social service agencies, those on social assistance, and members of nearby First Nations communities. Beyond vaccinations, attendees also left with important supplies: 2,100 lbs of dog and cat food, litter, leashes, collars, toys, and more. It’s all part of making sure pets in vulnerable households not only survive but thrive.
The Ontario SPCA first launched these vaccination clinics in Cornwall back in 2017 after seeing a concerning rise in parvovirus cases. By 2019, their efforts were paying off — 450 dogs had been vaccinated, and only three cases of parvo were reported in the area that year.
This year’s turnout shows the ongoing need for such services, and the organization isn’t stopping here. A follow-up booster clinic is already planned for August 10 at the same location, so families can easily continue their pets’ care.
“These clinics are only possible because of the amazing support from our partners, volunteers, and donors,” the Ontario SPCA noted in a statement.
