CORNWALL, ON – Homeowners tend to assume that interlock is a summer purchase and that anything not started by August waits until the following May. Interlock Experts, an Ottawa-based paver installation company working across the region including Cornwall and SDG, says that assumption costs people a season.
Excavation and paver laying continue until the ground freezes, which in Eastern Ontario generally means well into November in an average year. What ends earlier are two specific finishing steps: polymeric sand and sealing.
Polymeric sand is the jointing material swept between pavers, and it hardens through a water-activated reaction. It needs dry conditions during installation and above-freezing temperatures to cure properly. Sand set into damp joints or in weather that dips below freezing overnight does not bind the way it should, and the result shows up the following spring as washed-out joints and shifting pavers.
Sealing has similar temperature minimums. Most sealers want surface temperatures above roughly 10 degrees and a rain-free window afterward, which puts a firm end to the sealing calendar somewhere in October regardless of how mild the days feel.

What separates an interlock driveway that survives twenty Eastern Ontario winters from one that heaves in three is almost entirely invisible once the job is finished. It is the excavation depth and the base.
Freeze-thaw is the mechanism. Water that sits under pavers expands as it freezes, lifting the surface, then leaves a void behind when it thaws. A driveway built on a shallow base with poor drainage will telegraph that cycle within a couple of winters as dips, humps and separating joints. A proper base means digging deep enough for the application, building compacted granular material back up in lifts rather than in one dump, and giving water somewhere to go.
None of that is visible in a finished driveway, which is precisely why it is the first thing a low bid removes. Homeowners comparing quotes are generally advised to ask two questions of every contractor: how deep are you excavating, and how are you compacting the base.
Road salt is the second regional factor. Salt is hard on both pavers and the joints between them, and it is a large part of why sealing gets recommended in this climate more than in milder parts of the country.
