The Seaway Valley Theatre Company invites you to attend the first play of their 2026/2027 season, “Icemen,” the newest work by Governor-General’s Literary Award-winning playwright, Vern Thiessen.
March, 1936. Simcoe County, Ontario. A wealthy businessman (Nicholas Merizzi) wakes up bound and gagged in a utility shed, taken hostage by his own employees: brothers and ice harvesters, Joe (Mike Chatelain) and Rennie (Alex Merizzi). In the depths of the Great Depression, their livelihood is dying of the onset of refrigeration, which will only further enrich their employer. Desperate to claim what’s rightfully theirs, these honest workers turned reluctant captors will stop at nothing to give their greedy boss his final reckoning. A uniquely Canadian story written by one of the country’s most lauded playwrights, “Icemen” is an edge-of-your-seat thriller that exposes the human cost of capitalism and asks, when the wealthy exploit the working class, who are the real criminals?
The show is co-produced by Brendan Boisvenue (who makes his debut in the role) and SVTC vice president, Peter Labelle. Marking his seventh time in the director’s chair for the company is Paul Aubin.
“Icemen” will be staged at the Seaway Valley Theatre, 30 Sixth Street East, Cornwall, on November 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21 at 7:30 PM. Matinées will also be given on November 8, 15 and 22 at 2:00 PM. Reserved seats are $30.00 and can be bought in advance online at svtc.theticketwicket.ca or by phone at 613-933-3998. Optionally, for an additional $15.00, you can partake in a special wine and cheese matinée on November 8th. A dinner theatre performance will also be given on November 21st with reserved seats at $60.00 each.
