For the eleventh straight year, the City of Cornwall’s drinking water system has scored a perfect inspection rating from the Ontario Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks.

The detailed inspection focused on sampling requirements, equipment calibration, certification training and documentation review on the operation of the drinking water system for the previous twelve month period.

Throughout the year, Cornwall’s drinking water system goes through rigorous inspections.

“Our highly trained and dedicated staff are continuously monitoring our drinking water to ensure the safety and quality of the water for all residents and businesses,” said Owen O’Keefe, Water Purification Plant Supervisor.

Cornwall’s water is sourced from Lake St. Lawrence. Over 11 million cubic metres of fresh, clean water is pumped annually through more than 278 kilometres of watermains.

On average, the Water Purification Plant produces 32,000,000 litres of water per day.In 2018, the City treated and distributed enough water to fill 4,600 Olympic sized swimming pools.

“Our water system is a critical piece of infrastructure and we take great pride in having achieved a perfect inspection rating for 11 consecutive years,” said Shawn O’Brien, Water and Sewer Supervisor.

Raw water intake and zebra mussel control is next to the R.H. Saunders Power Generating Station Dam.The Water Purification Plant is located at 861 Second Street West.Water storage facilities are located at the Boundary Road Reservoir and the Elevated Water Storage Tower on Tollgate Road.
