Cornwall Ontario – It was definitely a wonderful and very colourful event at the Akwesasne International Powwow this past weekend and I, Seeker Chick Mai-Liis, was very happy that I was able to attend. This being the very first Powwow that I have been to.
Not only was there traditional dancing, drumming and singing, with competitors of all ages but the regalia that the dancers wore was absolutely amazing.
As well as the performers I got to visit the many vendors who were selling traditional crafts such as Sweetgrass baskets, jewellery, clothing and natural beauty products. I was especially interested to hear about traditional soap making from ashes and also had Twinkle Twinkle Little Star sang to me in Mohawk as well as meeting the Graphic designer of The Indian Time newspaper who is also an an amazing artist and seemed to enjoy The Seeker newspaper. (See photo below.)
There was also plenty of great food being served, including fry bread, Indian tacos, sweet sausages and Buffalo burgers plus more.
The time that I spent at the Powwow watching the performers and visiting with everyone was wonderful and I must say that I really enjoyed the announcer, he was so funny and entertaining. All in all, a great time was spent among such a wonderful community of friendly and welcoming people. I’m already looking forward to next year and the 18th Annual Akwesasne International Powwow.
