Long gone are the days of plumbers simply being an expert in pipes, clogs, and drains.

Over the last decade we have seen the world of plumbing come along in leaps and bounds. With the introduction of new technology across the entire industry, good quality plumbers need to have an incredibly diverse skill set — as well as a good grasp on the old plunger, of course.

But in all seriousness, if you want to make it in the world of plumbing, you need to be good.

And if you want to make it in the world of plumbing in Ajax?

Well, you need to be great.

So, without further ado — the top five skills every Ajax plumbing guru needs to know.

1.  Problem Solving

I know that this first skill could be perceived as an obvious one, but that doesn’t make it any less important.

Ajax is a town that has grown at a rapid rate since the end of the second world war. As a result, it is full to the brim with a variety of homes — some of which were built as early as 1910, and others as recently as 2021.

This means that as an Ajax plumber you are going to be dealing with a wide spectrum of homes on a daily basis.

And guess what?

A large number of these are going to have plumbing so old that they are no longer taught in trade school, or so new that they aren’t in trade school yet — which is why you have to problem solve.

To make it in this business you need to be able to think critically and assess every situation from multiple angles. You have to come up with effective solutions to problems you didn’t know existed.

And without the ability to do so, you might as well take your business elsewhere.

2.  Install a Thermostatic Mixing Valve

You would be hard pressed to find an older home that doesn’t need a bathroom renovation.

And Ajax is full to the brim of older homes.

With the population growth that Ajax has experienced since the early 2000s, there has been an increased demand for updated homes. As a result, the number of bathroom renovations occurring each year have gone through the roof.

And with this has come the popularity of thermostatic mixing valves.

As simple as they may seem in theory (I mean, all they do is blend hot water and cold water together…), their installation can pose a number of unique problems — particularly in homes with old and outdated plumbing.

Which is why this skill is something you should prioritize if you are an Ajax plumber.

3.  Strength and Stamina

Whether you are plumbing a new home or renovating an old bathroom, you can be certain that it is going to be hard work.  And when this occurs in a growing area full of large homes and big buildings, this work gets even harder.

It is for this reason that as an Ajax plumber you need to look after yourself.

Actively participating in some form of physical activity that improves muscular strength and endurance is integral to getting the most out of your work day, while preventing work related injuries — ensuring your success in the industry in the process.

So, I’ll say it again — look after yourself.

4.   Deal with frozen pipes

Throughout the summer Ajax is truly beautiful. Warm, green, and sunny, there are very few other places in Canada where you would rather be.

Then it starts to cool down a little…

And by winter you are looking down the barrel of freezing temperatures for three straight months. With this rapid drop in temperature comes a huge increase in the number of frozen pipes experienced by residents — many of which will be sitting inside an interior wall.

All of which means you better be prepared.

So, if you don’t feel comfortable getting into walls and defrosting pipes on a regular basis, then Ajax plumbing may not be for you.

But, if this is in your skillset, you are going to thrive.

5.  Plumbing Passion

Let’s face it — the plumbing industry in Ajax is booming at the moment.

There is more work than we can handle. Which means that if you are a plumber in this busy region of Ontario, you are going to be putting in some work. You can expect long days, demanding clientele, and more often than not, complex plumbing problems.

As such, it is imperative that you actually enjoy plumbing if you want to make it in the industry.

This isn’t to say that you should put your job before everything else (which is silly) — but rather that you need to have a genuine passion for the plumbing trade, because you are going to be doing a lot of it.

This is key to job enjoyment, job satisfaction, and not getting burnt out at work.

Passion = results.

Especially in plumbing.

Last Notes

Working in Ajax plumbing is a challenging — but rewarding — trade.

With work ramping up steadily over the last few years you can expect to be busy. Within this, you can expect to face frozen pipes, big renovations, and complex problems that you may not see anywhere else in the country.

So, make sure you are ready.
