I’m sure you have all heard of the event with the catchy title of “Seedy Saturday”. An event that to me has always signaled the start of Spring. Well last year this name changed to “Transition into Spring with Transition Cornwall+” and this year, I finally learned why the name change.
The Seeker has been fortunate to share each month, a column from Transition Cornwall+, written by different members of the group. These columns discuss subjects that that help us live more sustainably and make us aware of the environment and our surroundings.
On Saturday, March 16th, 2024, The Seeker was fortunate to be included in the “Transition into Spring” event that was held at The Benson Centre in Cornwall. The event ran from 10:30 am to 2 pm and was very well attended as always, with numerous booths, workshops, activity stations, swap tables and “Ask an Expert” tables. There were so many ideas to help us live more sustainably in our day-to-day lives, especially as we move into spring and summer months.
I love this sentence from Transition Cornwall+ “We really want you to leave singing the words “swap, share, repair, reuse, plant, conserve, restore… and compost”. I know I for one got some great ideas and also met up with a lot of people I hadn’t seen in a long time. Actually a lot of smiling and happy people!
Speaking of reuse, Artist and Photographer, Jacqueline Milner, who had a workshop on reusing, had an interesting way to use the Seeker pages and twigs to make flowers.
Thanks to John Grow (centre) and Louise Mignault (far right), two of our Seeker contributors and Advisory Board Members, who helped at the Seeker table, along with myself, Seeker Chick Mai-Liis, (left) we saw a lot of happy readers walking away with the March issue of the SDG&A Cornwall Seeker and we were able to tell them a little bit more about ourselves and the mission of the Seeker, which is to “Seek Out” all the Gems in our community and spread “Your Much Needed Dose of Positive News” to everyone PLUS of course we encouraged them to look out each month for the “Transition Cornwall+” column as it always contains such important information to help us make sustainable choices which are not only great for our planet but more importantly great for our community!
Oh wait, before I go, at the beginning of this article I mentioned that I finally learned why the name change from “Seedy Saturday” to “Transition into Spring”. Well, here is what Tish Gibbs, one of the members of Transition Cornwall+ told me. Initially, when Seedy Saturday began, many years ago, (and I remember visiting one of the first events upstairs at the Agape Centre) the idea was to feature seed vendors, but over the years, things have changed and many seed vendors now sell online. Consequently, by this time of the year, many are already sold out and do not have enough to sustain a full showcase at trade shows. For this reason, the “Seedy Saturday” event morphed into “Transition into Spring” and now includes so much of the original attractions, the seed sellers, plus so much more…
For more info about Transition Cornwall+, visit them on Facebook or visit their website at: www.transitioncornwall.com and of course read their column each month in the SDG&A Cornwall Seeker, in print (where you can subscribe to get it delivered for 12 months to your home) or online, (where you can subscribe to get it delivered monthly, or yearly, straight to your inbox) – this way you can read the Transition Cornwall+ column each month and never miss an issue!
Seen in the photo top left are John and Susan Towndrow who have written many Transition Cornwall+ columns for The Seeker. They are seen with Cornwall Councillor and a member of the SDG Cornwall Health Coalition, Elaine MacDonald. In the last photo you can see more happy smiling people visiting the event, the lady with the big smile being Cathy Winter from Ramada Inn.
Finally, remember, you can Subscribe to the Seeker at: www.theseeker.ca to read the Transition Cornwall+ column each month or you can pick up a copy of The Seeker from one of the many locations in Cornwall or throughout SDG&A.
