My Dear Conservative Friends, Trudeau is out, now what?

I hope this letter finds you in good health
And in a prosperous enough position to put wealth
In the pockets of people like me: down on their luck

-Hamilton Lyrics

I genuinely want to know: why do you think Pierre Poilievre will magically fix the economy? I ask because, historically, conservative leaders have not exactly been champions “for the people.” Their track record speaks for itself. They tend to favor policies that lean heavily on free-market ideals—what some might call uber-capitalist solutions. These are often touted as quick fixes for economic woes but, in practice, they tend to prioritize big corporations and the wealthy, while leaving everyday people to fend for themselves. I’m assuming you are not part of the 1%, therefore, why would you think Poilievre gives a damn about you?

Historically, Conservatives often justify cuts to social programs or tax breaks for the wealthy as measures to “stimulate the economy.” But when has trickle-down economics ever truly benefited you? Has it ever helped the middle class or working families? All it has done is widen the gap between the rich and poor. How is that not obvious? When it really matters, who ends up shouldering the burden? The idea that giving more money to the rich will somehow “trickle down” to the rest of us has proven to be a myth. Instead of using their overflowing pockets to spread wealth to others, the rich have simply found ways to keep it all—sewing deeper pockets to ensure nothing spills out.

Poilievre pretends to have your back, but isn’t his rhetoric designed to simplify complex issues into convenient soundbites? “Axe the Tax”, “Spike the Hike”, “Trudeau must go”… those all sound like fire lyrics in a rap song, but what concrete solutions does Poilievre offer? We need more than three-word slogans from the next Prime Minister of Canada.

Besides, you don’t have to look far to see the damages a Conservative government can do. We see it every day, right here in Ontario. Cuts to Healthcare, Cuts to Special Needs Education, Controversies surrounding the Greenbelt and Ontario Place, Bill 124 and Wage Caps, the Long-Term Care Crisis, Nepotism allegations… These are only a few of the many scandals Ford has under his belt. You do realize that when all is said and done, provincial governments have a greater day-to-day influence over your quality of life than the Federal one, yes? It handles the services most people interact with regularly, such as healthcare, education, and transportation.

Yes, Justin Trudeau’s government made mistakes—we all know it did—but can’t you see that going back to a Conservative Government only restart the vicious cycle? It’s like exchanging a buck for four quarters, getting short-changed in the process.

Don’t you see how both sides of the political spectrum—whether left or right—are keeping us polarized? It’s a deliberate distraction, keeping us fighting one another while they pursue their own agendas. The truth is, politics aren’t linear; they’re circular. Go far enough right, and you’ll find yourself meeting the left, and vice versa. The extreme ends aren’t that different—they’re both about control. Aren’t you tired of the constant bickering and division? The constant barrage of “us vs. them” rhetoric? What if that’s the point? To keep us divided, angry, and distracted while the real issues—corporate greed, environmental destruction, and inequality—remain unaddressed?

I, for one, am exhausted. And I’m ready for a new system.

You and I aren’t that different. We both simply want to be able to earn a decent living, own a house, put food on the table, send our kids to college, maybe indulge in a little extra and, if we’re lucky, save a bit for a rainy day. I am sorry to break it to you, but Poilievre isn’t going to make your life better, so can we try to focus on our commonalities and fight together against the real enemy?

Don’t you agree that our country deserves a balanced system that represents the majority, not the 1%? It deserves thoughtful, inclusive leadership that genuinely works for everyone—not just the wealthy or well-connected. And right now, that kind of leadership is nowhere to be found.

Cue the revolution.
