On Thursday, Mario Leclerc, the New Democratic Party (NDP) candidate for Stormont—Dundas—Glengarry (SDG), officially launched his campaign in preparation for the next federal election, which has yet to be called. The event, held in at the Benson Centre in Cornwall, Ontario, brought together a enthusiastic group of supporters to hear Leclerc’s vision for the riding. His platform focuses on key issues such as affordable housing, improved healthcare, and putting a cap on grocery essentials.
Leclerc, a dedicated community advocate and paralegal at the Administrative Housing Tribunal, has a strong track record in the riding. In the 2011 federal election, he ran as the NDP candidate in SDG, earning 17.5% of the vote—a good increase from the party’s 2008 results. In his speech, Leclerc spoke of “everyday people”, highlighting the NDP’s commitment to tackling the cost-of-living crisis and strengthening public services and work for every Canadian. Leclerc is also on the Cornwall and District Labour Council executive.
Although the election has not yet been called, Leclerc and his team are already working to connect with voters across the diverse riding, which includes urban centers like Cornwall and rural areas in Dundas and Glengarry. Supporters are optimistic that his dedication to the community and progressive policies will lead to an even stronger result whenever the next election takes place.
So far, Leclerc will be facing off against Liberal candidate Sarah Good, a well-known city councillor, and the incumbent Conservative MP, Eric Duncan, in the upcoming race.
