Statement from the City of Cornwall regarding the new promo video

“The City of Cornwall has been deeply engaged with local business owners to navigate the challenges posed by U.S. tariffs, and this video is just one example of the many ideas that have emerged from these ongoing conversations. It highlights key sectors such as manufacturing, agriculture, and tourism, which are especially impacted, showcasing the resilience of our local businesses. The decision to feature the Heads of Council was made as part of a larger strategy to emphasize the strong, unified leadership of Cornwall, Akwesasne, and SDG in supporting our community. We’re committed to championing all businesses and will continue to feature a diverse range of voices, including women business owners, in future campaigns that celebrate the strength and vibrancy of our local economy. This video marks the first in a series aimed at fostering community unity, encouraging everyone to shop local, and ensuring that together, we rise to the challenges ahead.”

EDITOR’S NOTE: Thank you for the clarification, City of Cornwall, but it doesn’t change the fact that your video is problematic.

Representation matters, especially in publicly funded materials meant to reflect our entire community. The absence of women in visible, central roles—and the limited, arguably tokenistic inclusion of racialized individuals—sends a message, whether intentional or not.

Stating that you “are committed to championing all businesses” doesn’t address the core issue: why those who were left out this time happen to be the same groups who are so often underrepresented.

YOU MUST DO BETTER. And should pull this video until you fix it to truly represent of our region..
