City of Cornwall Endorses Climate Adaptation Plan
Council has officially endorsed the Climate Adaptation Plan, a comprehensive strategy designed to prepare the community for the growing impacts of climate change. The plan, known as Climate Resilient Cornwall (CRC), was developed in partnership with Pinna Sustainability Inc. and builds on the progress made through Cornwall’s Climate Action Plan, which focuses on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and fostering a low-carbon future.
“Our focus changes to the Climate Adaptation Plan which both prepares for and responds to the impacts of climate change that are already here, and those that we know are coming,” said Michael Fawthrop, General Manager of Infrastructure Planning and Municipal Works. “Adaptation is about building resilience to hazards like flooding, extreme heat, storms and invasive species. The plan ensures that our community, infrastructure and natural environment are prepared for the impacts that we cannot avoid.”
Mayor Justin Towndale commented on the plan’s endorsement, stating, “Our climate is changing. Winters are becoming milder and summers are becoming warmer. This Climate Adaptation Plan will ensure that our community is prepared for the future.”
Cariad Garratt of Pinna Sustainability Inc. presented highlights from the plan to Council, which sets forth ambitious goals. These include enhancing emergency management capacity for extreme events, reducing energy-related risks by improving access to affordable and resilient energy solutions, and boosting the climate-resilience of new and existing buildings. Other priorities focus on protecting the health, safety and well-being of residents, especially vulnerable and underserved populations, strengthening municipal infrastructure and services, expanding green infrastructure, safeguarding the natural environment, and integrating climate resilience into municipal planning and decision-making processes.
Development of the 80-page report involved extensive engagement and workshops with city staff and community partners, focusing on plan framework and actionable steps. Among the recommended actions are pilot projects to install heat control and cooling systems in new municipal facilities, such as green roofs, shade structures, and improved insulation in the short to medium term.
Angela Parker, Sustainability Projects Coordinator for the City of Cornwall, emphasized the importance of collective action: “This plan shows our community’s commitment to building a climate-resilient future. By working together, residents, businesses, and municipal leaders, we can ensure Cornwall remains a safe, vibrant, and sustainable place for generations to come.”
