Ontario Fire Marshal Concludes Investigation Into Fatal John Street Fire

The Ontario Fire Marshal has concluded its investigation into the fatal 31 John Street fire, which occurred on January 1, 2026.

Cornwall Fire Services, working alongside the Office of the Fire Marshal (OFM), confirmed that the cause of the fire has been classified as undetermined.

One person lost their life as a result of the fire. The identity of the deceased has not been released, as next of kin have not yet been notified.

“Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones affected by this loss,” said Matthew Stephenson, Deputy CAO and Chief of Fire Services. “We also want to recognize our firefighters for their professionalism and dedication under extremely difficult conditions.”

Smoke Alarm Deficiencies Identified

As part of the investigation, officials found that only one working smoke alarm was present in the four-unit building. Fire officials say that, given the size and layout of the property, more than ten working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms should have been installed to adequately protect residents.

Fire Services say the finding underscores the importance of complying with Ontario fire code requirements and ensuring that every unit and common area is equipped with properly functioning alarms.

Fire Safety Reminder

Cornwall Fire Services is reminding residents that working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are required by law and are critical to home safety. Alarms should be installed on every level of a home, tested monthly, and replaced every 10 years. Alarms should never be disabled.

“Working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, along with a practiced escape plan, can mean the difference between life and death,” Chief Stephenson said.

Community Support and Education

In the coming weeks, Cornwall Fire Services will launch an “After the Fire” program in the affected area. The initiative will provide residents with fire safety education, support, and resources following the incident.
