If you haven’t made plans for Canada Day yet, here’s your reason.
The Cornwall Canada Day Committee has announced that David Wilcox will be headlining this year’s celebration at Lamoureux Park, taking the Lions Bandshell stage at 8:30 p.m. And honestly, this is a pretty great get for a free show.
If the name isn’t ringing a bell, let me help. His debut album came out in 1977, and he’s been a fixture of Canadian rock ever since, racking up multiple gold and platinum records with hits like “Riverboat Fantasy,” “Bad Apple,” and “Layin’ Pipe.” His music has been skated to by Olympic champions Sale and Pelletier, his songs have shown up in movies, he’s played Carnegie Hall and the Montreux Jazz Festival. The guy has range.
What makes him worth showing up for, though, isn’t really the resume. It’s the live show. He’s known for his distinctive guitar work, thoughtful and often humorous lyrics, and a smooth baritone voice that sounds even better outdoors on a warm July night. He’s been at this for over four decades and still maintains a serious touring schedule across Canada, drawing crowds with guitar-driven sets well into his 70s. That’s not someone going through the motions, that’s someone who genuinely still loves doing this.
His music blends rock, blues, country, ragtime and other roots styles in a way that tends to work for just about everyone. The kind of show where your parents are happy, your kids are running around, and you’re standing there realizing you actually know more of these songs than you thought. That’s a good Canada Day.
The concert is just part of a full day at Lamoureux Park. The committee is promising live entertainment throughout the day, plenty of vendors, and children’s entertainment from morning through evening. Free admission, all of it. The Canada Day committee and their sponsors are covering the whole thing, which, in 2026 when everything costs money, is genuinely worth appreciating.
So mark July 1st, get yourself down to the park, and let a Canadian legend close out your Canada Day the right way.
