Give us a one-sentence elevator pitch for your book. What’s it about?
Solnia’s quiet life as a weaver’s daughter is upended when she meets a blind stranger determined to uncover the secrets of his past in the city’s guarded Archives.
What sparked the idea for this book?
I was seventeen when I had the idea of a boy who appeared blind but could read in the dark. Tie in the fact that I was completely smitten with a boy at that time (now my husband), and the story practically wrote itself!
Was there anything that surprised you after the book was published?
A section of journal entries has become many readers’ favourite part of the book. I had no idea so many people would connect with the snarky tone and angsty feel of those sections.
Who is the target audience, and what books is it comparable to?
Anyone who loves books, world-building, shape-shifters, and a good slow-burn romance
filled with longing and sacrificial love.
Think Sorcery of Thorns by Margaret Rogerson, for its libraries and academic feel, Inkheart by Cornelia Funke for its book magic, and Twilight by Stephenie Meyer for its emotional longing.
What are you working on next?
I am in the last throes of writing Renegade Shadows, the sequel to Between the Shadows. It has magical prison breaks, ancient underground cities, and more libraries!
