“Where there’s a will, there’s a way” is a quote that I’ve grown up hearing my whole life. I’ve heard it from my father countless times whenever I was facing challenges and needed a reminder that perseverance and grit will always lead me to a solution.
Ambition is a strange thing. It can be the reason an athlete trains themselves to the core, the reason a student spends years studying, or the reason you keep trying after failing. It can push someone to accomplish things they once thought were impossible, but ambition can also be misunderstood. Sometimes, people see ambitious individuals as overly competitive or obsessed with success, but I don’t think ambition is about being better than everyone else. I think it’s about becoming better than the person you were yesterday.
Everyone has a different idea of what success looks like. For some people, it might be becoming a doctor, starting a business, winning a championship, or changing the world. For someone else, it might be providing a good life for their family, finding a career they love, or simply becoming someone they are proud of. What matters is that the goal means something to you.
The problem is that we often talk about ambition as if it only matters when it leads to something impressive. We celebrate the person who becomes famous, earns millions, or achieves something the world can recognize. We never see the sacrifices they’ve had to make behind the scenes to achieve this goal; day in day out. They kept going even when they had no external proof that they were going to succeed, their belief in themselves was enough. We don’t see the early mornings, the failures, the self-doubt, or the moments when that person almost gave up. We only see the result.
That’s why the quote “where there’s a will, there’s a way” means so much to me. The “will” is the part people don’t always see. It’s the decision to keep going when no one is watching. It’s choosing to try again after failing. It’s believing in something before anyone else believes in you.
But ambition isn’t always about knowing exactly where you’re going. Sometimes, you have a goal without knowing how you’re going to reach it. You don’t know who you’ll meet, what opportunities will come your way, or what obstacles you’ll face. You just know that you want something more, and sometimes, that’s enough to start. You have to step one at a time, and your next step becomes clear only when you take the first step.
I think one of the most important parts of ambition is being willing to adapt. The way you imagined when you were younger might not be the path you eventually take. Your goals might change, your priorities might change, or you might discover something you never expected to care about. That doesn’t mean you’ve lost your ambition; it means you’ve grown.
The path doesn’t always look like what you imagined it would. Sometimes, you have to take a completely different route to reach where you want to go. Sometimes, you have to create your own opportunities instead of waiting for them to appear. Having ambition means refusing to believe that where you are now is where you have to stay. It’s terrifying and exciting not knowing how far you can actually go.
Of course, ambition has its limits. It is important to recognize that not everything is within our control. Hard work does not guarantee success, and wanting something does not automatically make it possible, but I don’t think that’s the point of the quote.
I don’t think we should be afraid of wanting more from our lives. We should dream big. We should set goals that scare us a little. We should want to accomplish things that matter to us, even if other people don’t understand why, because at the end of the day, ambition isn’t about proving that you’re better than someone else. It’s about proving to yourself that you’re capable of more than you once believed. The world is full of people who were told something couldn’t be done. Some listened, others didn’t. The difference was never that they knew exactly how they would succeed. They simply had the will to find a way.
I think to me this quote means to keep going when the path becomes difficult. And when the way we imagined disappears, to have enough will to build another one.
