I was 16 years old when I had my first introduction to manifesting. I was at summer camp and we watched the movie “The Secret” which is an incredible move that focuses on the Law of Attraction. For years, I thought the Law of Attraction equalled Manifesting, I mean, after all, it’;s practically the celebrity of the manifestation world.
It’s the one that gets all the attention, the podcasts, the vision boards, and the social media quotes floating around on pictures of sunsets. The basic idea is simple: what you focus on expands, and like attracts like. If you’re thinking positively, feeling grateful, and focusing on abundance, you’ll attract more of those things into your life. It’s a beautiful concept, and one that has helped millions of people change their lives. But there’s another manifestation principle that doesn’t get nearly as much airtime, and personally, it’s the one that changed everything for me when I learned about it nearly four years ago. It’s called the Law of Assumption, and while it sounds similar, the approach is a little different. Instead of focusing on attracting what you want, the Law of Assumption asks you to assume you already are the person who has it. Not in a pretend way. Not in a “my bank account says $42 but I’m going to buy a yacht” kind of way. It simply asks you to stop identifying as the version of yourself who is trying to get somewhere and start identifying as the version of yourself who is already there.
Upon learning about the Law of Assumption, I immediately realized THIS is actually what I had been doing for so many years, unknowingly, anytime I was able to call in the things I wanted. Before even learning about this law, I had this knack for assuming I had whatever I wanted.
Whether that was skipping to the front of the line during my clubbing days at university or simply assuming I would get a great parking spot when I went out to do groceries. It even happens all the time when I find myself winning some funny prize at an event. My friends will often laugh when they tell stories about my “luck” and say things like “Shannon always calls it when she wants something and somehow she always gets it! She just knows she’s going to get it”.
So, imagine my surprise when I realized I had been living by the Law of Assumption for years without knowing it and that’s when it all began to make sense to me! That knowing I’ve always had was actually assuming!
Think about it this way. If you want a successful business, most people spend their days thinking about how badly they want a successful business. They worry about where the clients will come from, whether they’re doing enough, and how long it will take before things finally work out. The problem is that every one of those thoughts is coming from someone who doesn’t believe they have what they want yet. The Law of Assumption flips the script. Instead of asking, “How do I become successful?” it asks, “What would I be thinking if I already was successful?” That”s a very different conversation.
Long before my business FanSaves was successful, when it was still just a little seed growing from an idea, we assumed it would be big. We assumed it would grow internationally! We acted like it already was HUGE even while the seed hadn’t even produced it’s first leaf yet but we trusted it was growing and that things were moving under the soil. And then it grew! And grew some more! Until we were living out the craziest dreams that inly once lived in our mind’s eye.
The reason this matters is because our assumptions create our reality. Every single day, we’re making assumptions about ourselves, our relationships, our finances, and our future. We assume we’re good at certain things. We assume we”re bad at others. We assume money is easy to make or hard to make. We assume opportunities are everywhere or nowhere to be found. Most of these assumptions happen so automatically that we don’t even notice them. The Law of Assumption simply invites us to become conscious of what we’re assuming and choose assumptions that align wit the reality we’d like to experience.
What I love about this concept is that it takes manifestation out of the waiting game. You’re no longer sitting around hoping the universe eventually delivers your package. You’re becoming the version of yourself who already knows it’s on the way. It’s the same confidence you have after clicking “Place Order” online. You don’t spend the next three weeks wondering if the order exists. You know it’s coming, so you carry on with your life. That’s the energy the Law of Assumption is asking us to embody.
The truth is, neither the Law of Attraction nor the Law of Assumption is better than the other. They’re simply different lenses through which to view manifestation. But if you’ve ever felt stuck trying to attract something, it might be worth asking yourself a new question: Who would I be if I already had it? Because sometimes the fastest way to manifest what you want isn’t to chase it, attract it, or convince it to show up. Sometimes it’s to assume it’s already yours and start living from that place today.
Happy Shanifesting!
