Walmart Canada becomes the first major retailer in Canada to introduce a hydrogen fuel cell electric semi-truck (CNW Group/Wal-Mart Canada Corp.)

MISSISSAUGA, ON – July 1, 2024 – In a groundbreaking move towards sustainability, Walmart Canada has introduced the first hydrogen fuel cell electric semi-truck in the Canadian retail sector. The Nikola Hydrogen Fuel Cell EV Class 8 tractor, now operational in Mississauga, Ontario, marks a significant step in Walmart Canada’s journey towards a fully alternatively-powered fleet.

This innovative vehicle, which boasts a range of approximately 800 kilometers, operates with zero tailpipe emissions, potentially preventing 97 metric tons of CO2 emissions annually. This milestone makes Walmart Canada not only the first major retailer in Canada but also the first retail fleet in North America to deploy such a vehicle, according to Nikola.

Gonzalo Gebara, President and CEO of Walmart Canada, highlighted the significance of this achievement: “We’re proud to introduce Walmart Canada’s first hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle, a major milestone on our journey to becoming a regenerative company. This pioneering step reflects our commitment to embracing new technology and driving industry-wide change.”

The truck, sourced by Etobicoke-based ITD Industries Inc., a leading transportation solutions provider, will be utilized for longer-haul trips across Ontario, further extending the capabilities of Walmart’s alternatively-powered fleet.

Nikola President and CEO Steve Girsky expressed pride in supporting Walmart’s sustainability efforts. “This collaboration aligns perfectly with our mission to drive innovation and environmental responsibility in the transportation industry. Together, we’re making significant strides towards a zero-emissions future,” Girsky stated.

Ontario’s Minister of Energy and Electrification, Stephen Lecce, praised Walmart’s initiative, emphasizing the province’s expanding hydrogen economy. “As we expand production of clean energy, businesses like Walmart are investing in new technology and creating jobs. Their decision to deploy this truck in Ontario is a testament to our rapidly growing hydrogen economy,” Lecce commented.

Michael Buna, Senior Director of Walmart Canada’s National Fleet, reiterated the retailer’s commitment to sustainability. “Introducing this hydrogen fuel cell semi-truck is a major milestone in our plan to power 100% of our fleet with alternative power. Embracing various types of alternative power allows us to accelerate our sustainability efforts,” Buna explained.

The Nikola hydrogen fuel cell electric semi-truck operates by carrying high-pressure gaseous hydrogen in specialized tanks, converting it to electricity through a fuel cell stack. The only byproduct of this process is water vapor, making it a truly green solution. Natural Resources Canada underscores hydrogen’s crucial role in achieving a carbon-neutral future, highlighting its status as the most abundant element with the highest energy per unit of any fuel.

This pioneering move by Walmart Canada sets a new standard in the retail industry, paving the way for a more sustainable future in transportation.
